480 Square Feet
| June 17th, 2008 at 18:32 |There’s an apartment for rent in my friend’s complex. It’s an end unit, and he’s got the only adjoining unit. It’s a 1 bedroom, 480 square feet (I have no idea how big that is), and it’s about $50 less than what I’m paying now. My friend’s rent just went up $50, and mine hasn’t gone up in two years, so it’s more likely that my landlord increases rent sooner than his. It’s much closer to work, so I’d pay way less in gas, too. The problems I can think of are these:
- I hate moving. Hate it. I haven’t fully recovered from moving here, and that was almost 2 years ago.
- I’d have to sign a year lease. I hate the thought of committing to living somewhere, even if that does contradict #1. A year is a long time!
- I have no idea how big 480 square feet is. I don’t even know if that’s bigger or smaller than my current apartment, and I don’t think I’d want anything smaller. I have too much crap.
- It has coin-op laundry. Granted, it’s SUPER CHEAP coin-op, and I probably pay more for my laundry here than I would there load-for-load, but at least here I can do it naked.
I’d really like to move into a place with decent water pressure and that wasn’t a half hour drive to anywhere, but I don’t know if this is the place I want to move, y’know?

OMG I just realized that I could probably do my laundry with something other than cold water. Maybe my clothes would feel clean for a change. I always feel skeeved out, like my scrubs are still covered in patient-germs, since my washer is only hooked up to the cold water.

Eeeew for no hot water wash!! I always wash Ian’s work clothes in hot because … eeew. And sheets and towels because … eeeew. And I don’t even know what’s so eeew about Ian’s work clothes. Maybe it’s just because he’s always so sweaty with no A/C and stuff.
Anyway, if you can’t find more pros to moving to that apartment than cons … maybe no move? You and Nate practically live together already … hahah, just kidding. Isn’t it nice to have your own place to retreat to? Is that right? Retreat …? Anyway, maybe there is a better apartment just as close to work with washer/dryer in the unit? I’m rambling.
I’ve always wanted to rent one of those loft apartments in downtown [insert city here]. That would just be rad. Right in the middle of everything. Definitely something I should have experienced before having kids!

Man, I want a downtown loft apartment, too. Even downtown Bangor! *sigh*

Hm…480 is small, but not tiny. I mean, it wouldn’t be the size of a tiny hotel room or anything. This apartment and the cottage I lived in last summer were both that size, and for one person, it’s PLENTY. (So, for one plus a boyfriend, I think that’d be fine.)
A good rule of thumb is that (close) adults really only need to live in about 300 square feet. And if it’s laid out right, you can fit the kitchen, living room, office area in those 300 sq feet with plenty of room for everyone to breathe easy. Then add on however many sq feet for your bedroom/bathroom. In this case, that’s a 10 x 18 space, which seems pretty generous.
I like living in small spaces more than you do, though. So.
When would you move? B/C if it’s in August or something, I would drive out there for a week to help you clean/set up house/throw crap out so you have room.
Moving is fun. I say do it.

Okay, time out. I should have specified this earlier. I do not want to live with Nate yet. I don’t want to live with anyone until I’m, like, engaged to them. Nate and I sleep together a lot but srsly. We are taking this slow. At least, that is what I think is going on. I Don’t knoww.
This apartment is available in July, but I think I need more time than that to give my landlord notice. I can’t imagine moving earlier than August. I’d rather not go until the end of the year. Or like 2038.
I would like for you to help me.

Moving in summer would suck balls. Hot, bug bites, sweating … bleck.
And I was just kidding about the Nate thing. I think it’s good you guys are taking your time with that part. It’s a huge jump to give up your own space and not have somewhere to go when you need to feel independent and like you’re doing the right thing.

No, I knew you were, but I don’t know if Alix was and I’ve been getting it from people at work, too. I feel like I’m some sort of freak for not wanting to move in with him yet :\
And moving any time sucks balls. Summer, winter … whatever :)

No, no, no I wasn’t trying to imply you two would live together. I think it’s very smart to wait on such a big step like that. Besides, you two seem great right now, so why rock the boat? Anyway, I said 1 + boyfriend because there would (seemingly) be enough room for you to have your own lovely life and the sometimes overnight guest/sometimes hang out in the living room together guest without feeling like you were on top of each other.
Unless you wanted to be. Erm.
Oh. And by “‘close’ adults” I meant you would only need 300 sq feet, and you and I could share an equally sized living space easily, and mom and dad could, and you and your husband could, and a mom and daughter could, etc. Not necessarily DIANA plus NATE.
But I dig why my comment looked like I was designing my maid of honor dress, and I am sorry to have stressed you out.
But I would like an empire cut.
Just kidding.
Dude, that does sound like too soon to move. But I would love to help you.

I am hypersensitive and stuff lately. That’s not your fault. Sorry.
